Lest We Forget: Coming Together to Remember

by Paul Buck

Each year, on the 11th of November, people across our towns and villages pause for a shared moment of silence. It’s a moment that unites us, across generations, communities, and backgrounds, as we remember those who gave their lives in service to others.

Remembrance Day is not just about looking back at history; it’s about gratitude. Gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy, for the peace we often take for granted, and for the bravery of men and women who stood up when the world needed them most.

Why We Remember

From the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars to more recent conflicts, countless individuals have made the ultimate sacrifice. Behind every name etched on a memorial is a story, of family, friendship, love, and courage. These are the stories that shaped the communities we live in today.

The red poppy, growing among the devastation of war, reminds us that even in the darkest times, hope can bloom again. Wearing it close to our hearts connects us to all who came before us, and to each other.

Boydens Remembers Across Our Communities

At Boydens, we are proud to stand alongside our local communities in honouring those who have fallen. On Monday 11th November, our teams across Colchester, Kelvedon, Frinton, Sudbury, and Chelmsford will pause at 11am to observe the two-minute silence.

In Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town and a proud garrison city, the Remembrance service at the War Memorial on High Street draws hundreds who come together to honour the fallen, a tradition deeply woven into the fabric of the town.

In Kelvedon, villagers gather at the Kelvedon War Memorial on the High Street, a simple yet powerful reminder of the lives given by those who once walked the same lanes and fields we do today.

Along the coast in Frinton-on-Sea, wreaths are laid at the Memorial on Connaught Avenue, where the community stands side by side to reflect on the cost of peace.

In Sudbury, the Market Hill service brings the town together in gratitude, as the bells of St Peter’s Church ring out in solemn tribute to those whose bravery still echoes through the generations.

And in Chelmsford, people gather by the Civic Centre Memorial Gardens, a place of quiet beauty and reflection in the heart of the city, where each poppy serves as a promise, that we will never forget.

In Their Memory

At Boydens, we believe community is built on connection, to our neighbours, our history, and the shared values that unite us. As we gather at local memorials, watch the poppies fall, or simply take a quiet moment of reflection, we do so with a shared promise:

We will remember them.

From all of us at Boydens, thank you to those who served, those who continue to serve, and those whose memory lives on in the hearts of our communities.
