Why Colchester Matters to Us:

Designated as the first Roman Colonia under the Emperor Claudius, Colchester became the capital of Roman Britain—making it one of the earliest cities in the country.

Known historically as Britain’s oldest recorded town, with Pliny the Elder mentioning it as early as AD 77

Its official city status was granted in November 2022 as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations

At Boydens, we’ve grown alongside this remarkable place—launching our first branch right here in 1966, and continuing to serve the community with pride, local insight, and a deep sense of tradition.

The Boyden family were also building houses in Colchester from 1852!
