As car ownership became an essential part of modern-day life, it opened up the opportunity of living further from town and city centres. If the 20th century was the era of the motor car, the 21st century is likely to be defined by the emergence of the electric vehicle. A company created to build electric vehicles less than 20 years ago (Tesla) now has a greater market capitalisation than that of the Ford Motor Company, established exactly 100 years previously, which demonstrates how the balance of power has shifted from petrol and diesel to electric vehicles. 59
