boydens.co.uk 47 Location focus With the help of our friends at Colchester Borough Council, we take a look at the spectacular history of Britain’s first city, which today is a regional powerhouse for culture and tourism and well on the road to becoming a major hub for business, tech and innovation. Colchester is one of East Anglia’s finest historical towns. As Britain’s First City, there is much to discover in the town centre itself and further afield across the wider beautiful Borough of Colchester. One of the star attractions is Colchester Castle, built on the foundations of a huge Roman temple destroyed by Queen Boudica and is Europe’s largest Norman keep. Today, the museum is packed full of ancient treasures from Colchester’s past. The Borough of Colchester comprises 135 square miles of diverse countryside, towns and villages, all with unique identities and popular destinations such as the Dedham Vale, nestled in the heart of Constable Country, and Tiptree, where renowned jam maker Wilkin & Sons has its factory and tearooms. Uncover a town brimming with history, a diverse mix of shops and restaurants, attractive coastlines and riverside locations, picturesque architecture and quintessentially English rural landscapes immortalised by famous artists.
