Firefighters lend helping hand for book fair

Firefighters from Colchester have stepped up to help a long-running Colchester Book Fair.

NSPCC volunteers are preparing themselves for a record year, ably assisted by teams from Colchester Fire Station who will help to move approximately 35,000 books, CDs, DVDs, games and jigsaws to the fair which takes place at Holmwood House School on Saturday and Sunday, October 28th and 29th.

All proceeds from the sale of the donated items will be donated towards the vital work undertaken by the children’s charity.

Elisabeth Borg, Chairman of the NSPCC Book Fair Committee and former consultant at Boydens estate agency, a long-time sponsor of the event, said: “This event relies on teamwork. From an original group of 12 volunteers, we now have 70 people helping during the weekend itself and around 25 people working throughout the year, collecting, sorting and pricing books. The involvement of the firefighters of Colchester to literally get the show on the road is the icing on the cake”

Boydens six branches across Essex and Suffolk have collected many of the items which will be for sale over the weekend.

Mrs Borg added: “We’ve come a long way since our first book fair in 1989 which was a one-day event and raised around £5,000. Last year we raised £24,000 for a charity which is close to the hearts of so many people. We are especially grateful to the team from Colchester Fire Station, our sponsors, Boydens, and particularly to Holmwood House School for allowing us to use its excellent venue and, of course to the public who so generously donate items and then support the fair itself.”

The book fair is open 9.30am-4pm both days, with fresh books available on the Sunday.
